Monitoring lead in air

A new client of Envirochem within the oil and gas industry, have contacted our occupational hygiene team to help with monitoring lead in air.

This is while their contracted workforce are stripping and servicing old storage tanks ready to be used again. We have set up both personal and static background monitoring within the tanks, and all activity in and out of each tank across the day is logged to work out the personal exposure.

We will now analysis the samples back at our lab to check the dust concentration of both inhalable and respirable dust, as well as metal content using our ICP-OES, with the primary focus being the lead concentration.

Envirochem offer the full range of Asbestos Air Monitoring Services geared specifically to meet the requirements of your project, in accordance with HSG 248.

Our growing fleet of asbestos analysts are provided with fully equipped mobile laboratories allowing for on-site analysis of air samples and instant certification upon completion of analytical monitoring.

Whilst the majority of our workload is undertaken during normal working hours from Monday to Friday, our team of analysts are available for overnight and weekend work. We will always endeavour to assist at short notice with any local emergency situations which may arise.

Reports and certificates are provided on-site in printed format, along with a digital copy of all documentation available via email.

We offer a variety of air monitoring options;

  • Background Air Monitoring
  • Leak Air Monitoring
  • Four Stage Clearance Air Monitoring
  • Reassurance Air Monitoring

Occupational hygiene monitoring during lead roof removal works

Envirochem were approached by a new client who required occupational hygiene monitoring during lead roof removal works at a historic building in Winchester.

The client was carrying out roof remediation works on a building in the historic town of Winchester. The process involved removing the old lead roofing used many years ago and replacing to improve the quality and look of the roof. During this work, employees are potentially exposed to lead fragments and dust through breathing and skin contact which can have health effects. Envirochem monitored the activity by placing static and personal inhalable dust monitors in locations where the lead removal activities are taking place to discover the general inhalable dust levels in the atmosphere and then later digested the filter and analysed the digestate on the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer to discover the lead content of the dust. These results can be used to inform the health and safety department of dust levels in the atmosphere and whether further measures are needed to be put in place to suppress dust and protect employees with specific personal protective equipment (PPE).

Envirochem carry out a wide range of occupational hygiene, chemical, microbiological and asbestos services during all types of construction activities and in other scenarios. Please contact us if you have any questions on this;

Air quality monitoring in a Biomass plant

Envirochem were approached by one of our clients in Herefordshire to investigate air quality within a newly fitted biomass plant. Due to the nature of the plant being a very warm, humid environment with a production of airborne dust and potential airborne bacteria from the product being processed, it was suggested that inhalable dusts and bio-aerosols would be analysed to give an indication of whether employees are exposed to elevated levels of dust and bacteria within the internal atmosphere.

Envirochem offer a wide range of occupational hygiene services to a wide variety of clients, not only those in the biomass energy industry. Please contact us if you require any occupational hygiene, chemical or microbiological services.

More UK schools suspected to have asbestos than first suggested

In the 1950’s to the mid 1980’s, Asbestos was widely used as a building material. It is a good choice of material for fireproofing and insulation due to its fire resistant properties. Any building, including; houses, factories, offices, hospitals and schools, that were built before the year 2000 could contain asbestos.

Most asbestos in schools can be found in pipe covering, walls/ceilings and fire doors. The asbestos becomes a risk to people when it is disturbed, which could happen at any time. The risk of asbestos being in schools, is the lack of understanding of asbestos among workers, teachers and students. This risk is greatly increased due to a many head teachers and governors not knowing the risks that could be in their building.

There is growing concern that more should be done to minimise the risks of asbestos within schools.

Occupational hygiene Services – Water or soil sampling site visits

Water or soil sampling site visits

Our occupational hygiene team not only carry out site visits for air quality monitoring, they are also available to come to sites and sample both soil and water for analysis. The operative will come to site with all the necessary sampling equipment and can take basic water samples for analysis such as suspended solids, pH and metals, or bacterial water samples for analysis such as Ecoli, legonella and biological oxygen demand. For soil sampling this could be for potential asbestos samples or for WAC certification.

For our site visit charge the cost will be based on the locality from our office in Fareham, which will be an additional fee on top of the analysis. But this takes away any courier costs or worry of the sample/s not being taken adequately for the analysis intended and also to ensure they meet our UKAS certification guidelines (for our certificated procedures only).

If you would like to book in either a one off visit, or to set up routine visits to your site for sampling, please see the form below, Or if you are unsure of the analysis you require, we can also provide expert advice to suit the needs of your business or site.

Air Pollution in London – What can we do?

It has been noted in recent news that London has exceeded its annual air pollution limit within recent years and millions of habitants are suffering from respiratory diseases such as asthma due to exposure to particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and other pollutants. Some areas of London are the most polluted areas in Europe and air quality in and around the city have become a real health issue.

It is not just the air we breathe while out and about in the open that we must be concerned with but also the air we breathe while in the workplace. Poor air quality in offices, schools and other places of work has been associated with headaches, fatigue, trouble concentrating and irritation of the respiratory system. Factors such as poor ventilation, temperature control, humidity control and proximity to contaminants such as dust and bacteria can all contribute to health problems.

Envirochem offer services to help measure these contaminants and help to pinpoint where the pollution issues lie. Monitoring of airborne dust in the form of inhalable or respirable particulates, humidity, temperature and airborne bacteria (bioaerosols) are all types of testing and analysis Envirochem offer, both in the workplace and in the wider environment. Please contact us if you have any issues with air pollution in the workplace in London or anywhere else in the UK and we can help.

Asbestos Air Monitoring

Envirochem offer a wide range of asbestos air monitoring services in accordance with HSG 248.

Our asbestos analysts are provided with fully equipped mobile laboratories allowing for on-site analysis of air samples and instant certification upon completion of analytical monitoring.

Background Air Monitoring

Background Air Monitoring is conducted to establish airborne fibre concentrations prior to any activity that may lead to airborne asbestos contamination or in specific locations with known asbestos based materials.

Leak Air Monitoring

Leak Air Monitoring is conducted outside the enclosure/work area while work is in progress. It is undertaken to verify that the control measures are adequate in controlling asbestos fibre release to the outside.

Four Stage Clearance Air Monitoring

Four stage clearance Air Monitoring is undertaken following the removal of asbestos based materials (generally notifiable materials such as insulation boards, insulation and coatings) under fully controlled conditions. This will enable a certificate of reoccupation to be issued to reassure those reoccupying the area that it is safe to do so.

Reassurance Air Monitoring

Reassurance Air Monitoring is conducted to determine asbestos fibre concentrations upon completion of the assessment of site for reoccupation. It is also undertaken after the removal of non-notifiable asbestos containing materials (such as vinyl floor tiles, cement products, textured coatings) or following the disturbance of suspected or identified asbestos containing materials.

Personal Air Monitoring

Personal Air Monitoring is conducted to assess whether or not the personal exposures of workers comply with the relevant control limits and to determine the suitability of respiratory protective equipment being used.
