We have a wide range of services and analytical testing options that we can provide and tailor to our clients requirements. Come and meet us to find out more.

Asbestos Air Monitoring and Fibre Counting

Our growing fleet of asbestos analysts are provided with fully equipped mobile laboratories allowing for on-site analysis of air samples and instant certification upon completion of analytical monitoring.

Whilst the majority of our workload is undertaken during normal working hours from Monday to Friday, our team of analysts are available for overnight and weekend work. We will always endeavour to assist at short notice with any local emergency situations which may arise.

Here is one of our team reading filters for our in house quality control system to ensure we provide the best possible service.

Personal Air testing for Silica Content

A new client works within the electromagnet industry providing parts for MRI scanners. We visited their site which contains several units moving through the process from raw metal materials to the coiled magnet itself.

A new process involves mica tapes to wrap copper metal for the magnet. We carried out personal air testing for silica content and also inhalable and respirable mica particles due to the chemical having two EH40 limits, to make sure the employee was not subjected over the workplace levels.

Identification of unlabelled substances to determine what they contain

At Envirochem, we often receive unusual samples for analysis. One recent example of this was a set of around 60 bottles collected by us from a residential property. The bottles had been found during a house clearance as the previous owner had owned his own printing company. We created an inventory of the compounds in order to request a quote from a disposal company that we work with. We plan to analyse any unlabelled substances to determine what they are.

During the inventory, we found two bottles containing mercury. Mercury is a very interesting element. It is the only metal to be liquid at room temperature and has a very high surface tension, so forms rounded beads of liquid.

We test many different types of samples for mercury including soil, water, leachates (as part of the WAC testing suite of analysis) and air (mercury fumes or dust).

Occupational hygiene monitoring during lead roof removal works

Envirochem were approached by a new client who required occupational hygiene monitoring during lead roof removal works at a historic building in Winchester.

The client was carrying out roof remediation works on a building in the historic town of Winchester. The process involved removing the old lead roofing used many years ago and replacing to improve the quality and look of the roof. During this work, employees are potentially exposed to lead fragments and dust through breathing and skin contact which can have health effects. Envirochem monitored the activity by placing static and personal inhalable dust monitors in locations where the lead removal activities are taking place to discover the general inhalable dust levels in the atmosphere and then later digested the filter and analysed the digestate on the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer to discover the lead content of the dust. These results can be used to inform the health and safety department of dust levels in the atmosphere and whether further measures are needed to be put in place to suppress dust and protect employees with specific personal protective equipment (PPE).

Envirochem carry out a wide range of occupational hygiene, chemical, microbiological and asbestos services during all types of construction activities and in other scenarios. Please contact us if you have any questions on this;

Personal Air Sampling During Asbestos Activities

With the up and coming revision of HSG 248 and the continual renewal of the Removal Contractors Licence to work with Licensable materials, the HSE are emphasising the requirement for personal air sampling and the need to collect accurate and useful information.

The effectiveness and value of the personal air monitoring will be enhanced by the correct planning by the contractor, sufficient sampling duration, adequate documentation of the activities being monitored, the removal contractor selecting a range of removal techniques and materials with the correct analysis and future use of the data.

With this in mind, Envirochem are working closely with the industry and enhancing their paperwork to capture the required information to allow the licensed contractor to adhere to the guidelines set by the HSE. For more information on how we can assist you for personal air sampling requirements, please call us or fill in the form below.

Asbestos Air Monitoring

Envirochem offer a wide range of asbestos air monitoring services in accordance with HSG 248.

Our asbestos analysts are provided with fully equipped mobile laboratories allowing for on-site analysis of air samples and instant certification upon completion of analytical monitoring.

Background Air Monitoring

Background Air Monitoring is conducted to establish airborne fibre concentrations prior to any activity that may lead to airborne asbestos contamination or in specific locations with known asbestos based materials.

Leak Air Monitoring

Leak Air Monitoring is conducted outside the enclosure/work area while work is in progress. It is undertaken to verify that the control measures are adequate in controlling asbestos fibre release to the outside.

Four Stage Clearance Air Monitoring

Four stage clearance Air Monitoring is undertaken following the removal of asbestos based materials (generally notifiable materials such as insulation boards, insulation and coatings) under fully controlled conditions. This will enable a certificate of reoccupation to be issued to reassure those reoccupying the area that it is safe to do so.

Reassurance Air Monitoring

Reassurance Air Monitoring is conducted to determine asbestos fibre concentrations upon completion of the assessment of site for reoccupation. It is also undertaken after the removal of non-notifiable asbestos containing materials (such as vinyl floor tiles, cement products, textured coatings) or following the disturbance of suspected or identified asbestos containing materials.

Personal Air Monitoring

Personal Air Monitoring is conducted to assess whether or not the personal exposures of workers comply with the relevant control limits and to determine the suitability of respiratory protective equipment being used.
