Controlled Demolition at Fawley Power Station

Last week our analysts supported Brown and mason in the controlled demolition of another building at the Fawley Power Station.

Envirochem’s expert analysts were on site carrying out perimeter monitoring during the demolition and then we will now be monitoring whilst the rubble is cleared to ensure all safety measures are met.

Introducing our new Machine: Skalar Bluevision

Here at Envirochem, we are always looking at new ways we can improve our services, reduce turnaround times and offer more testing and analysis options. We recently invested in a new Machine: Skalar Bluevision – Continuous Flow Analyser, that does just that!

This machine allows us to process more samples without further staff and more quickly, allowing us to reduce our turnaround times and offer more testing options.

It can test one sample for 8 different tests, that we would have beforehand done as separate tests, this massively reduces the time it takes to process samples.

  • Ammonia
  • Chloride
  • Fluoride
  • Phenol
  • Sulphate
  • Phosphate
  • Nitrate+ Nitrite

What are the benefits of purchasing an air quality self-test kit?

You may have seen that here at Envirochem, we have launched a new range of self-test kits, specifically designed to help keep you safe in your own home and working environment. The new self-test kits are cost-effective, fast and easy-to-use.

When many people hear the words ‘Air Quality testing’ they usually think externally, like exhaust pollution, CO2, fossil fuels.. the list goes on! What many people don’t realise is there can be a number of chemical substances found in the air inside a property or building known as VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds), which can also be harmful.

VOC’s are common chemical contaminants that are often found in an internal environment, as gases emitted from certain solids or liquids and the concentration of many VOCs are, predictably, higher indoors than outdoors due to the ‘trapped’ environment.

Organic chemicals are widely used as ingredients in common household items like paints and varnishes, cleaning agents, sealants, glues, fuels, and combustion products. All of these products and others are capable of releasing organic compounds when you use them and also, to a certain extent, when they are stored.

To help identify these VOC’s you can use our indoor air quality self-test kit, in which you will find an SKC 575-001 indoor air quality badge in a sealed bag, detailed and easy-to-follow instructions on how to test, a sample submission form and return packaging.

If you’re concerned about the quality of the air inside your own home or workplace environment, you can order one of our self-test kits from our online shop on the Envirochem website and our expert team of staff are always on hand to answer any questions you might have and help you through the process.

Alternatively, if you feel that you cannot take your own samples for any reason, we are also able to attend site and take the samples for you and return them to our own in-house accredited Laboratory for analysis. Please live message or email us for this service.

Why you should purchase a self-test legionella kit.

Here at Enviorchem, we have recently launched a range of self-test kits to help keep you safe and make it easier for you to test for harmful substances in your home or workplace. Our wide range covers a multitude of various substances, including Legionella, and comes with all the necessary equipment and safety measures needed, so it’s super quick and easy to test for it yourself.

When it comes to the water we use everyday, it’s important to ensure that it’s safe enough to be used and consumed and to make sure it poses the least risk of immediate or long-term harm.

Legionella is a bacteria which, if left in favourable conditions, can cause Legionnaire’s disease. The bacteria can be found in areas like cooling towers, spa pools and showers, among other places. It can be hard to know when water isn’t quite right without organising proper testing. Our self-test kits allow you to take a sample of the water to send to us for testing.

In our kits you will find specialist water sample bottles, a sample submission form, and easy to-follow detailed instructions of how to take the sample yourself. They’re quick, safe and easy to-use.

If you’re concerned about water quality or the presence of legionella, you can order a self-test kit from the Envirochem website today. And, our expert team is always on hand if you need more information or would prefer for someone to attend a site to take samples for you.

Below are the links to purchase any of our self test kits or if you prefer to visit our website – https://envirochem.co.uk/shop/products

Three reasons why noise monitoring matters

Three reasons why noise monitoring matters

Whether you work in the construction industry or use heavy machinery, noise monitoring matters. Staying within the legal levels for workplaces and operating in the public domain will minimise risk to your employees and your business.

Excessive noise and the law

17,000 people in the UK suffer deafness, ringing in the ears or other ear conditions caused by excessive noise at work. This is why the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 (Noise Regulations 2005) were brought in make it a requirement of employers to prevent or reduce risks to health and safety from exposure to noise at work.

Guidance on acceptable levels of noise is available on the Health and Safety Executive website[http://www.hse.gov.uk/noise/index.htm].

Why noise monitoring matters

Here are three reasons why noise monitoring matters and how you can ensure you stay within the legal guidelines:

  1. Nuisance noise

If you are working on a construction project near homes, offices or schools you are required to keep noise within strict decibel levels dependant on the time of day. Monitoring the noise being generated by your site while ensure you are within those guidelines and can respond robustly to complaints about nuisance noise.

  1. Planning applications

If you have monitored noise levels during your past construction projects you can use this data as part of planning applications for future work. Being able to prove you are compliant with noise level rules will give assurance to planning decision makers.

  1. Noise induced hearing loss

Prolonged exposure to excessive noise in the work place can have a negative impact on your employees’ hearing. Monitoring the levels of noise individuals are exposed to is an important part of your responsibility as an employer. It will enable you to introduce PPE measures to prevent hearing loss and demonstrate to employees that you are looking after them, not to mention reduce time off due to work-related illness.

Putting in place effective noise monitoring

At Environchem we offer several different noise monitoring services. We can:

  • undertake walkthrough noise surveys to assess noise levels throughout your premises
  • undertake octave band assessments that assist in the choice of noise abatement equipment or PPE
  • assess daily exposure with personal dosimeters to give you accurate data about the noise levels each individual employee is exposed to in a day.

Our team at Envirochem have 25 years of experience in the market. Get in touch with our team today to discover how our noise monitoring services can benefit your business.

Indoor construction dust

Conducting construction work inside raises a new set of challenges, especially when working around sensitive equipment that can be adversely impacted by dust.

Recently we help monitor dust levels before, during and after works that were carried out over night to limit the impact on daytime production in the factory. With the data we collected we were able to identify when dust levels had reduced to acceptable levels to resume normal work and how long this settlement took.

We also undertook additional monitoring of total inhalable dust, respirable dust and silica content that the construction workers were being exposed during their work.

Personal Air testing for Silica Content

A new client works within the electromagnet industry providing parts for MRI scanners. We visited their site which contains several units moving through the process from raw metal materials to the coiled magnet itself.

A new process involves mica tapes to wrap copper metal for the magnet. We carried out personal air testing for silica content and also inhalable and respirable mica particles due to the chemical having two EH40 limits, to make sure the employee was not subjected over the workplace levels.

Monitoring within a gas turbine engine

Last week we visited a local aircraft parts operator, to carry out monitoring within a gas turbine engine.

We carried out gases checks for carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide using our Dreager gas detector and also checked for particulates and VOCS whilst it was running.
