Plans to Develop a Cycle Track in Kearsley Contested Due to Contaminated Land

The development of unused land in Kearsley into a new cycle track was met with controversy as it emerged that the land is an old landfill site, contaminated with many toxic chemicals and materials  including copper, zinc, arsenic, lead and asbestos.

Residents claim that those local to the area are aware of the dangers of the sites and that the land is best left alone. However a member of the council’s cabinet for the environment has stated that the land would only be developed after a contamination expert had visited the site to clean the site. He also pointed out that it is common practice to develop on old contaminated lands, after appropriate remediation.

Asbestos Stories From the Last Year

A short list compiled by Mesothelioma and Asbestos Awareness Centre shows the biggest stories related to asbestos from the last year. One of the largest stories to come out of this is a statement from a book by Donald Trump. In this book he claimed that asbestos is a ‘mob conspiracy’ and ‘100% safe’. This is obviously not true with masses of medical evidence to the contrary.

Government Decides Not to Erase Work Records following Campaign from Asbestos Support Group

Government plans to dispose of employment records after 6 years instead of 20 was meet with mass controversy by the Asbestos Victims Support Group. This is due to the fact that those which were exposed to asbestos at work will have difficulty proving where and how they were exposed. Considering that Mesothelioma can take 30 years to develop following exposure to asbestos, if the work records are deleted, claiming compensation would become difficult for those affected.

Asbestos Found in Hundreds of Kent Schools

Information has been released confirming 346 Kent schools contain asbestos; the substance can be found in any building built before the year 2000 including schools, houses, offices, factories and hospitals across the UK.

If managed properly and left undisturbed in a safe condition, asbestos containing materials do not necessarily pose a risk to health. It is only when the substance is disturbed or damaged causing fibres to be released that it becomes a serious health risk.

One of the ways asbestos can be managed is by conducting a Management Asbestos Survey. This will identify the presence and location of any asbestos containing materials, whilst also providing recommendations as to how these materials are properly managed.
