What to do if you find asbestos in your house

If the case is you are living in a house which was constructed before 1980, there is a high chance it will have asbestos in it. Unfortunately, asbestos fibres are so fine (700-1000 times finer than that of hair) they are not visible through naked eyes. Therefore the only way to identify them, or find out whether your house actually has asbestos, is to look for probable places asbestos was used and then consult a laboratory and licensed inspector to test it.

If you are suspicious of asbestos being present in your house and want to test for asbestos in your home, call a licensed asbestos inspector. Here at Envirochem will can come out to your property and take a sample of any suspicious material. They will also advise you to take precautions while it is done, such as removing furniture, etc. The sample is  then tested in our UKAS accredited laboratory for asbestos.

More UK schools suspected to have asbestos than first suggested

In the 1950’s to the mid 1980’s, Asbestos was widely used as a building material. It is a good choice of material for fireproofing and insulation due to its fire resistant properties. Any building, including; houses, factories, offices, hospitals and schools, that were built before the year 2000 could contain asbestos.

Most asbestos in schools can be found in pipe covering, walls/ceilings and fire doors. The asbestos becomes a risk to people when it is disturbed, which could happen at any time. The risk of asbestos being in schools, is the lack of understanding of asbestos among workers, teachers and students. This risk is greatly increased due to a many head teachers and governors not knowing the risks that could be in their building.

There is growing concern that more should be done to minimise the risks of asbestos within schools.

Cases of Asbestos Related Illness in Scotland Highest in UK

Asbestos in public buildings throughout Scotland is causing an increasing number of health concerns.

In 2014 Scotland had the highest recorded number of mesothelioma cases in the world, at 175.

Victims of asbestos exposure are asking for the problem to be prioritised in the upcoming council elections.

For the more information please click here

Public buildings can have a significant amount of asbestos present and it is important that this is managed appropriately by having up to date asbestos surveys carried out to reduce the risk of exposure. General building use can cause asbestos containing materials to deteriorate and subsequently release asbestos fibres in to the air.
