Two Northamptonshire companies have been fined for asbestos related safety failings, after an HSE inspection revealed they did not have an up to date asbestos register, or a refurbishment/demolition survey carried out prior to starting building work. In doing so they put employees at risk of asbestos exposure for some time, work on site was immediately stopped to prevent any further damage.

Information has been released confirming 346 Kent schools contain asbestos; the substance can be found in any building built before the year 2000 including schools, houses, offices, factories and hospitals across the UK.
If managed properly and left undisturbed in a safe condition, asbestos containing materials do not necessarily pose a risk to health. It is only when the substance is disturbed or damaged causing fibres to be released that it becomes a serious health risk.
One of the ways asbestos can be managed is by conducting a Management Asbestos Survey. This will identify the presence and location of any asbestos containing materials, whilst also providing recommendations as to how these materials are properly managed.
Derbyshire County Council have been hit with a cost of more than £400,000 in asbestos related compensation claims. Hundreds of schools in the area are listed as containing asbestos, with more and more staff being being diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Teachers are being advised by the Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team to check the relevant asbestos registers to increase awareness of where the material is located.
