‘Wash salad’ advice after two die from E. coli

E. Coli has caused the deaths of two people in the UK, with over 100 more cases reported. The cause is likely to be unwashed salad leaves contaminated with the strain of E. Coli, but this is not confirmed.

This form of E. Coli (0157) can be found in several places as well as unwashed salads, such as animal faeces and guts. It is from here that they can contaminate food and water leading to outbreaks.

Successful UKAS Assessment

We are proud to announce that Envirochem has had another successful UKAS audit.

UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) is the accreditation body who checks that we are maintaining the high level of our sampling, analysis and reporting procedures.

We have maintained all of our current scope of accreditation which includes; the sampling and analysis of total inhalable and respirable dust,  water analysis for anions (bromide, chloride, fluoride, nitrate and sulphate) and metals (arsenic, barium, cadmium, calcium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, mercury, potassium, magnesium, manganese, sodium, nickel, thallium, zinc. Also our Mcerts accreditation for anions (chloride and sulphate) and metals (arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, manganese, nickel and zinc) in soil is also maintained.

During the visit Envirochem also had two extensions to the scope of our accreditation assessed. – Lead and Chromium in Paint and Bacteriological testing of water for total viable count, legionella, e-coli, pseudomonas and total coliforms.

These extensions to scope were both successful upon the clearance of findings.

Envirochem is an organisation that strives to deliver the very best service to our clients, therefore having our UKAS accreditation reassures our clients that they are receiving results that are reliable and accurate.

New Ion Chromatograph

Envirochem has completed the installation of our new Ion Chromatograph. This is part of our rolling scheme of improvement of analytical equipment. This allows us to maintain our high standards and quality of analysis.

The new Metrohm IC883 has already been subjected to and passed a mini validation and so can be used for UKAS testing of water samples for fluoride, chloride, bromide, nitrate and sulphate. It can also test for nitrite and phosphate. The ion chromatograph is also for Mcerts accredited work for chloride and sulphate in soils.

The ion chromatograph can be used in swab analyses to test surface contamination before and after cleaning works, as well as analysis of samples from occupational hygiene work for acid fumes such a s nitric acid, sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid in the workplace.

Leachate samples from Landfill Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) samples, will also run through this instrument.

The old ion chromatograph (on the left in the photo) will be utilised to run speciated phenols in waters and soil extracts. The two instruments are linked so that the same sample can be analysed for anions and phenols. We will be able to speciate and quantify common environmental phenol compounds such a creosols and chlorinated phenols.

The new software also allows the direct transfer of analysis data into our Laboratory Information Management system reducing the time taken and the chance of transcription errors.
