Some Parks in Bristol Contain High Levels of Lead in Paint

Many parks contain paint with dangerous metals in them. Six parks in Bristol have recently been tested and and half had ‘high levels’ of lead in paint. It has been advised that children should wash their hands after playing in such parks.

Asbestos Fears Following Wolverhampton Factory fire

Residents living within the vicinity of a huge factory fire in Wolverhampton have been advised to stay inside and avoid touching debris in case of asbestos exposure.

Asbestos from within the roof of the factory is likely to have been released during the fire, and anyone with ash or debris in their property is being advised by Public Health England to contact the council to get it removed.

Legionella Bacteria Detected In The Cooling Towers Of Sellafield

The bacteria Legionella have been detected at high levels in tower at the Highly Active Liquid Effluent and Storage (HALES) facility. The chief nuclear inspector has released a statement assuring that there has not been an outbreak of legionnaires’ disease and that this does not impact nuclear safety.

Nottingham’s Survival of the Fittest Race’s Swimming Section is Cancelled Due to Water Quality

The swimming section of the ‘Survival of the Fittest’ race in Nottingham had to be cancelled after several competitors fell ill, this was due to water quality exceeding safe levels. The type of bacteria found in the waters of the course has not been revealed, but the symptoms and circumstances seem to fit E.coli.

Manchester Nightclub Owner Sentenced After Asbestos Safety Failures

A nightclub owner who failed to have an asbestos survey of a venue in Manchester prior to refurbishment works has been sentenced and fined £5,720.00.

Charles John McGrath pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 as well as the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

Asbestos on Antiques Roadshow

Popular BBC program Antiques Roadshow has come under criticism after showcasing a World War Two gas mask without issuing an asbestos warning. These masks were made with asbestos in the filters and are hazardous to the wearer. The concerns are that people, including children, are now going to try on these old gas masks and be exposed to asbestos.

BBC have since issued an apology and a warning about the masks.

Security Firm Fined £1.8m for Poor Legionella Management

Security Firm G4S Cash Solutions has been fined £1.8 Million after failing to have proper legionella saftey measures in place, risking the health of it’s employees.

It was discovered that there was a serious lack of proper training, risk assessments or policies in place to safely manage the water systems. Investigations began when a local resident who worked at the site contracted legionellosis.

New Study Shows Asbestos Fibers Can Move in Soil

New research has shown that asbestos can move through soils and sands. This is a long held belief in certain circles, however new experiments have shown that this could be the case. There are concerns that the asbestos can enter ground water and be transported further

Back to school for pupils at Broke Hill Primary School after asbestos find led to closure

A school has opened for the first time since the summer. This was delayed due to the disturbance of asbestos by builders over the summer break. Certain area in the school are still closed however.
