Noise at a Waste Recycling Depot

Envirochem were recently approached by one of their clients to carry out a noise survey at a waste recycling depot in Reading

Envirochem travelled to Reading to carry out a Noise survey at a waste recycling depot in Reading. The waste recycling depot had a variety of areas in which noise could potentially become a problem for employees exposed to levels of noise above that of 80dB being the lower exposure action level as stated in the Noise at Work Regulations 2005. Using a Cassella CEL 620B Class I integrating sound meter with octave band filter and with the guidance of the client, noise samples were taken from nine different areas of the depot to take into account the different activities which take place in the yard and in the indoor areas. The noise levels were on a whole below the action level in the outdoor areas within the yard but exceeded this level when the samples were taken inside. This would suggest that employees working in the internal areas should be provided with hearing protection and this area should be classed as a hearing protection zone.

Envirochem can carry out a variety of occupational hygiene monitoring services for individual clients and businesses for noise and any other health, safety and environmental need. If you require any of our chemical analysis services, occupational hygiene services, asbestos or microbiological services, please fill out the form below or give us a call on 01329 287 777.

Envirochem were recently approached by an individual client who requested a Lead in paint survey be carried out on a property they wanted to purchase.

An individual client used Envirochems website to contact us and to request a Lead in paint survey on a property they wanted to purchase in Reigate. The client had a Home-buyers Report carried out on the property they wanted to purchase and it was highlighted that due to the age of the property, Lead paint may have been used in the decoration of the building. With concerns of the Lead content in paint and with a young child, the client wanted the paint from various areas of the building checked before remediation works are carried out within the property. With the aid of the client, sampling areas were agreed and scrapings from various surfaces were taken of the paint, labelled and bagged and taken back to the laboratory from analysis. Paint sampled are digested in Aqua Regia using microwave digestion and subsequently analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrophotometry (ICP-OES) using our UKAS accredited procedure (please note, Envirochem are only accredited for the analysis of Lead in paint and not the sampling of lead in paint). A report was subsequently produced to report the results.

Envirochem can carry out a variety of paint analysis for individual home buyers and other clients. If you require any of our chemical analysis services, occupational hygiene services, asbestos or microbiological services, please contact us on 01329-287777, or fill out the form below;

Air quality monitoring in a Biomass plant

Envirochem were approached by one of our clients in Herefordshire to investigate air quality within a newly fitted biomass plant. Due to the nature of the plant being a very warm, humid environment with a production of airborne dust and potential airborne bacteria from the product being processed, it was suggested that inhalable dusts and bio-aerosols would be analysed to give an indication of whether employees are exposed to elevated levels of dust and bacteria within the internal atmosphere.

Envirochem offer a wide range of occupational hygiene services to a wide variety of clients, not only those in the biomass energy industry. Please contact us if you require any occupational hygiene, chemical or microbiological services.

Well we have clients based throughout England as north as Leeds and as southern as the Isle of Wight. That does not include our client’s based in Wales and those we have flown to in Guernsey. There is nowhere we cannot come to sample!

The cost of our site visits are based on your business’s locality to our Fareham based office, which includes travel costs i.e. flights or ferry tickets, operative costs and any overnight accommodation that could be required (depending specifically on the job). This is an additional fee which is on top of the analysis that is carried out whilst on site.

If you require any occupational monitoring at your premise or to be advised on our other services we could provide to suit your individual business needs, please fill out the form below;

Occupational hygiene Services – Water or soil sampling site visits

Water or soil sampling site visits

Our occupational hygiene team not only carry out site visits for air quality monitoring, they are also available to come to sites and sample both soil and water for analysis. The operative will come to site with all the necessary sampling equipment and can take basic water samples for analysis such as suspended solids, pH and metals, or bacterial water samples for analysis such as Ecoli, legonella and biological oxygen demand. For soil sampling this could be for potential asbestos samples or for WAC certification.

For our site visit charge the cost will be based on the locality from our office in Fareham, which will be an additional fee on top of the analysis. But this takes away any courier costs or worry of the sample/s not being taken adequately for the analysis intended and also to ensure they meet our UKAS certification guidelines (for our certificated procedures only).

If you would like to book in either a one off visit, or to set up routine visits to your site for sampling, please see the form below, Or if you are unsure of the analysis you require, we can also provide expert advice to suit the needs of your business or site.

Monitoring in the Electric Industry: Part two

As part of our recent overseas trip to the local Channel Island of Guernsey, additional sampling took place which involved passive VOC badges and respirable dust monitoring. The monitoring were all personal samples, conducted on employees to analysis their exposure around the different generators and within the boiler rooms. The portable gas detection monitor was also used for short term analysis to measure the gas content within the exhaust fumes produced when the generators’ are first switched on.

All analysis was then conducted back in the UK at the Fareham based office, and a report was generated to compare the values analysed to the workplace exposure limit for the compounds detected: using EH40 limits. If you require monitoring for air quality please contact Envirochem for more information. Or if you have concerns and advice, we can use our operative’s experiences and knowledge to advise the type of sampling required for your site.

Monitoring in the Electric Industry: Part one

A recent overseas trip to the local Channel Island of Guernsey was carried out to monitor air quality at a site which used diesel based engines. The main testing was using portable particulate monitors which were set up in four different locations to measure PM2.5, PM10 and other airborne particles. They were set up and run statically in the same place for a week, recording any measurements picked up.

The analysis was then conducted back in the UK at the Fareham based office, with graphs and tables used to demonstrate the values detected against both the EH40 workplace exposure limits and the ambient air quality standards.

If you require monitoring for air quality please contact Envirochem for more information. Or if you have concerns and advice, we can use our operative’s experiences and knowledge to advise the type of sampling required for your site.

Monitoring in Listed Buildings

Alongside the work Envirochem carry out on construction and demolition sites and other industries, we have recently been required to work at a grade 1 listed building in a historic town in Hampshire.

During installation of a new lift, contractors were concerned of the exposure of their employees to inhalable dust and potential metals released from the materials used to build this building back in 1090. After chemical testing of materials to be taken as waste in our UKAS accredited laboratory, it was discovered that a high lead content was found. This resulted in the need for a continued monitoring program while excavation works are carried out of the listed building.

Using our UKAS accredited procedure, Envirochem are carrying out static and personal monitoring for total inhalable dusts to ensure workplace exposure limits are not exceeded. We are also testing the exposed filters for lead content to monitor the levels of lead in dust released as a result of these excavation works.

Envirochem’s care and ethical approach ensure works in sensitive buildings are carried out in a careful, safe and sincere approach. If you require monitoring of any sort in a listed building or any other building or site, please contact Envirochem for more information using the form below
