Turbidity

Turbidity is the cloudiness or the haziness of liquids caused by individual particles that are generally invisible to the naked eye. The measurement of turbidity is a key test of water quality. High turbidity in rivers and lakes can reduce the light that plants at the bottom receive, this in turn reduces the amount of organisms like fish and shellfish.

We can test for Turbidity using our Colourimeter, for more information please call us on 01328 287 777 or fill out the form below;

3 day rapid Landfill Waste acceptance test (WAC test)

We have seen an increase in clients requesting our 3 day rapid Landfill Waste acceptance test (WAC test). This leachate test is based upon BS EN 12457.

Construction sites often need to muck away and remove building or demolition waste from site in a timely manner. We can provide a quick turnaround either on received samples or pick up samples from site.

Envirochem can also offer a 3 day rapid turnaround on associated tests such as the total metals by acid digest test sometimes called the solids test.

There has also been a noted increase in clients requiring additional tests such as total and speciated polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to EPA 16 and also speciated hydrocarbons with CWG banding and aromatic/aliphatic split to assist in characterising the waste.

Suspended Solids

Suspended Solids is the measure of particles in a water sample trapped by a filter. It tests the quality of waste water after it has been through a waste treatment plant. We do Suspended Solids as part of our effluent water suite; this also includes Ammonia and Biological Oxygen Demand. The limit for effluent water is 500mg/l.

Chlorine

Envirochem tests for the presence of Chlorine. Chlorine is found in swimming pools, occurs in nature, usually in the form of salt (NaCl) and can be used as a disinfectant. In drinking water supplies and swimming pools chlorine is used as a disinfectant to kill bacteria. Chlorine evaporates quickly so samples need to be tested soon after sampling.

Water Testing Services

Envirochem routinely carry out a variety of tests including: Recreational water, Drinking or Potable Water, Environmental Water, Waste or Effluent Water….

Testing  for coliform bacteria and E.coli are the most important routine microbiological analysis carried out on drinking water. These tests provide a sensitive means for detecting faecal contamination, for assessing raw water quality, the effectiveness of water treatment and disinfection, and monitoring water quality in distribution.

Our Microbiology Lab is fully accredited

The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is the sole national accreditation body for the United Kingdom. UKAS is recognised by government, to assess against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services.

Our Microbiology Lab is fully accredited.

Accreditation by UKAS demonstrates the competence, impartiality and performance capability of these evaluators.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)

The impacts of outdoor air pollution are well documented with less attention paid to the importance of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). IAQ refers to the quality of the air in and around buildings and is impacted by gases such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide as well as VOCs, particulates and microbial contaminants.

We can be exposed to these contaminants at both work and home with the main impacts to health to the heart and lungs. The overall impact is reliant on the concentrations and exposure to these contaminants.

We have the ability to monitor the levels of these contaminants through both passive and active systems to identify whether levels are within specified standards.

Vehicle exhaust fumes

This article highlights concerns over workers being exposed to high levels of vehicle exhaust fumes and the damaging effects this can cause. There is growing awareness of the impact over the exposure of diesel exhaust fumes in particular with a special focus on particulate matter (PM) and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx).

Recently we carried out monitoring within a port terminal gate to determine whether workers were being exposed to levels of PM1, PM2.5, PM10 and Total PM (Mcerts accredited), NOx, SO2 and NO2 (UKAS accredited) that were above the ambient workplace limits.

Emissions Monitoring

Recently we carried out emissions monitoring at an oil recovery facility that has the potential to release significant levels of Hydrogen Sulphide and VOCs.

Working in close proximity can be harmful to these chemicals can be dangerous, with Hydrogen Sulphide being an asphyxiant. The VOCs were analysed for each of the BTEX compounds – Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene. Each compound has a specific EH40 work place exposure limit which was compared against these results to see if levels were being breached.
