Face fit testing is a critical part of ensuring respiratory protective equipment (RPE) provides the protection it is designed to deliver. Where tight-fitting masks such as half masks or full-face respirators are used, a secure seal to the wearer’s face is essential. Without an effective seal, even high-specification RPE can fail to protect against hazardous airborne contaminants.
Envirochem provides quantitative face fit testing carried out by Fit2Fit-qualified professionals, supporting organisations across a range of sectors to meet regulatory requirements and maintain effective respiratory protection programmes.
What We Test
Face fit testing assesses whether a specific make, model, and size of tight-fitting RPE fits an individual wearer correctly. Because face shapes vary, a respirator that fits one person may not provide adequate protection for another.
Testing verifies that the face seal remains effective during movement and normal working activity, confirming that the selected RPE is suitable for use as a control measure.
Our Process
Each assessment begins with an initial discussion to understand how respiratory protective equipment is used within your organisation. We review the types of respirators in use, the tasks they are worn for, and any existing RPE arrangements, ensuring testing is planned in line with real working conditions.
Quantitative face fit testing is then carried out using ambient particle counting (APC) methods. Wearers are guided through a series of standardised movements designed to replicate normal work activity, allowing us to assess whether the face seal remains effective during use. Specialist equipment measures particle concentrations inside and outside the mask whilst the wearer completes these exercises, in order to measure leakage and determine whether the required level of protection is achieved.
Where a suitable fit cannot be achieved, alternative mask models or sizes are assessed to identify a suitable option. Following testing, clear pass or fail certification is issued, with records securely documented for audit.
To support efficient testing, Envirochem requires the completion of a pre-appointment information form in advance, outlining requirements such as respirator condition, facial hair restrictions, additional PPE to be worn during testing, and medical fitness confirmation. This form should be completed and returned ahead of testing and is available to download here.
When is Face Fit Testing Required?
In order to remain compliant with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH), face fit testing is required wherever tight-fitting RPE is used as a control measure, and should be repeated where there is a change to the RPE type, size, model, or material, or where there is a change to the wearer’s circumstances that could affect the face seal. Examples given by the HSE include:
- weight loss or gain;
- substantial dental work;
- any facial changes around the face seal area such as scars, moles, or ageing;
- facial piercings;
- the introduction or change of other head-worn PPE, such as safety helmets, face shields, hearing protection, or eye protection.
Many organisations implement routine re-testing cycles as part of a structured RPE programme, with good practice typically recommending repeat face fit testing at least every two years
Compliance and Risk Considerations
Under COSHH and associated Approved Codes of Practice (ACOP), tight-fitting RPE must be suitable for the wearer. Face fit testing is essential to demonstrate that the chosen respirator can achieve its intended level of protection in practice.
Where fit testing is absent, poorly conducted, or not repeated when circumstances change, the integrity of the entire control strategy can be compromised. If the face seal leaks, the assigned protection factor cannot be relied upon. This may lead to uncontrolled inhalation exposure, even where engineering controls and task-specific risk assessments are otherwise robust. In such circumstances, exposure monitoring data, method statements and safe systems of work may no longer reflect the true level of risk.
From a compliance perspective, failure to implement and maintain an effective RPE programme can result in improvement or prohibition notices, enforcement action, and potential financial penalties. It may also affect contractor approvals, insurance conditions, and the ability to demonstrate due diligence following an incident or health claim.
An effective, well-documented face fit testing regime strengthens your position across audit, regulatory inspection and internal governance review. By identifying unsuitable facepieces early, verifying protection levels, and supporting structured re-testing cycles, our service helps ensure that respiratory protection remains reliable and continues to safeguard your workers
Why Choose Envirochem?
Envirochem’s face fit testing is delivered by Fit2Fit-qualified professionals with experience supporting organisations across a wide range of operational environments, including construction, utilities, emergency response and industrial settings. This practical experience ensures testing reflects how RPE is used in real working conditions, rather than as a theoretical exercise.
At Envirochem, face fit testing is not treated as a standalone activity. As part of our wider occupational hygiene offering, we understand how RPE fits within the hierarchy of controls alongside exposure monitoring and risk assessment. This allows us to support effective respiratory protection arrangements rather than isolated compliance checks.
Our results and documentation are clear and audit-ready, giving you the confidence to demonstrate compliance, address any issues identified, and maintain effective long-term control of hazardous airborne risks.
