Envirochem’s Microbiology Laboratory is now UKAS Accredited

We are excited to announce that our Microbiology laboratory is now UKAS accredited.

The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is the sole national accreditation body for the United Kingdom. UKAS are recognised by the government to assess laboratories  against internationally agreed standards.  Organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services are assessed by UKAS.

An accreditation from UKAS acknowledges the competence, impartiality and performance capability of a laboratory.

Legionella Bacteria Identified at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital

A patient of Gloucestershire Royal Hospital may have been infected with legionella bacteria after attending the hospital’s dialysis unit in October earlier this year. The hospital stated that enhanced measures were put in place in order to stop the bacteria from spreading to any other patients.

Legionella bacteria is more likely to spread in larger commercial buildings with more complex water systems and if contracted can lead to Legionnaires Disease; a potentially fatal lung infection.

Exeter Cathedral to undergo major asbestos removal works

Major asbestos removal works are due to take place at Exeter Cathedral in order to enable maintenance access to currently inaccessible areas.

The asbestos is to be removed from the roof spaces which should enable much easier and safer access for regular maintenance work which provides an essential part in the Cathedral’s conservation.

Explosive Gas Monitoring on Landfill Sites or For Developments Close to Landfill Sites

Flammable gases, such as methane, are often found in and near to landfill sites due to the decomposition of waste and migration of gases though soil. Methane, specifically, is an odourless gas which is flammable and is an asphyxiant gas. Gases such as methane pose a risk to enclosed spaces such as under floor voids and workers in poorly ventilated areas, as well as a fire/explosion risk to landfill sites themselves.

Envirochem offers monitoring for many types of gas including methane, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and nitrogen oxides. Envirochem also offers many other kinds of occupational hygiene analysis and monitoring.

Legionella Discovery Leads to Swimming Pool Closure

Traces of Legionella Bacteria were found in the males showers of Castleton Swimming pool during routine checks, leading to it’s closure. The same swimming pool was shut for three weeks in May following the discovery of Legionella in the heating system.

Legionella bacteria can cause legionaires disease, this has flu like symptoms and affects the lungs. In some cases the disease can be fatal.

Global map of soil pH highlights the difference between wet and dry climates

Researchers from the University of California have developed a global map showing how the soil pH changes abruptly between wet and dry climates. The research revealed that in wet climates, soil pH is acidic whereas in dry climates it is alkaline. This change in pH happens suddenly and therefore any small changes in temperature can have significant effects upon land use, soil fertility etc.

Legionellosis is a collective term for diseases caused by legionella bacteria including the most serious legionnaires’ disease, as well as the similar but less serious conditions of Pontiac fever and Lochgoilhead fever.

The bacterium legionella pneumophila and related bacteria are common in natural water sources such as rivers, lakes and reservoirs, but usually in low numbers. They may also be found in purpose-built water systems such as cooling towers, evaporative condensers, hot and cold water systems and spa pools.

Government Decides Not to Erase Work Records following Campaign from Asbestos Support Group

Government plans to dispose of employment records after 6 years instead of 20 was meet with mass controversy by the Asbestos Victims Support Group. This is due to the fact that those which were exposed to asbestos at work will have difficulty proving where and how they were exposed. Considering that Mesothelioma can take 30 years to develop following exposure to asbestos, if the work records are deleted, claiming compensation would become difficult for those affected.

Legionella Testing

Legionellosis is a collective term for diseases caused by legionella bacteria including the most serious legionnaires’ disease, as well as the similar but less serious conditions of Pontiac fever and Lochgoilhead fever.

Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia and everyone is susceptible to infection. The risk increases with age but some people are at higher risk including:

  • People over 45 years of age
  • Smokers and heavy drinkers
  • People suffering from chronic respiratory or kidney disease
  • Diabetes, lung and heart disease
  • Anyone with an impaired immune system

The bacterium legionella pneumophila and related bacteria are common in natural water sources such as rivers, lakes and reservoirs, but usually in low numbers. They may also be found in purpose-built water systems such as cooling towers, evaporative condensers, hot and cold water systems and spa pools.

Envirochem now offer legionella tests by using the most up to date scientific techniques, covering any water system in the workplace or domestic environment such as:

  • Domestic water systems
  • Cooling towers
  • Any drinking water service
  • Swimming pools
  • Spa pools
  • Car washes
  • Effluent
  • Vending machines
  • Evaporative condensers
  • Hot and cold water systems
  • Cooling waters
  • Process waters
  • Humidifiers
  • Dental equipment
  • Hot & cold systems
  • Borehole water
  • Showers
  • Sprinklers
  • Fountains
  • Water storage tanks
  • Natural water sources such as lakes and rivers and reservoirs

If conditions are favourable, the bacteria may grow increasing the risks of Legionnaires’ disease and it is therefore important to control the risks by introducing appropriate measures outlined in Legionnaires’ disease – The Control of Legionella bacteria in water systems (L8)
