ASBESTOS AWARENESS TRAINING

ASBESTOS AWARENESS TRAINING

In particular, awareness training should be given to all demolition workers and those in the refurbishment, maintenance and similar trades where it is foreseeable that their work will disturb the structure of the building, due to the possibility of discovery and disturbance of potential asbestos containing materials.

Envirochem can provide awareness courses at both our premises in Fareham and Yate, or at a suitable venue supplied by the client. Our courses are compliant with Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations, and can include additional site-specific information if required.

Previous clients have included Wates ConstructionFasset Property and Business Solutions, Holmes of Southampton and Wessex Demolition.

Total Organic Carbon

Total Organic Carbon is the measure of how much organic carbon there is in a sample. TOC is often analysed by finding the total amount of carbon in a sample and then finding the ‘inorganic carbon’, the amount of carbon dioxide and carbonic acid salts, and then subtracting the IC value from the TC value. This is a requirement for WAC certificates and can give you an idea of the amount of hydrocarbons. Inert waste has a TOC limit of 3%, stable and non-reactive non-hazardous waste has a limit of 5% and hazardous waste has a limit of 6%.

Swab sampling in Havant

A commercial office unit in Havant containing various industries, will be undergoing works to change one of their units into a new pharmaceutical lab. We were asked to swab the rooms in the unit and also the ceiling  and extraction ducts, for any residues before the lease of the new building is accepted. As part of a standard swabbing surveying, we completed organics, anions and pH analysis. The results from this survey will allow the company to supply the results and conduct any cleaning if necessary being the works begin.

Paint sampling for analysing the concentration of lead

As part of a major refurbishment project, we were asked by a company in Portsmouth to undertake paint sampling, for analysing the concentration of lead. This is so the paint is able to be safely disposed of, as well as protecting the employees carrying out the works by knowing the correct PPE to wear. We also do a paint suite which tests for cadmium, chromium and lead which are commonly found within paints and are heavy metals.

Emission test for fluoride and particulates

Recently in Southampton we carried out an emission test for fluoride and particulates. This is a different method compared to our normal emission testing, which requires impingers and condensers to capture the concentration of fluoride found within the emission stack. This method also takes three hours compared to the normal 30 minute sampling due to the different techniques involved.

Water Effluent Suite

The most commonly requested suite of water analysis is our effluent water suite. This includes suspended solids, ammonia and biological oxygen demand (BOD) and is often carried out on the inlet and outlet sections of water treatment systems to check the efficiency of the process.

In addition to tests required to satisfy Environment Agency (EA) guidelines, we can also accommodate testing requests to meet extra guidelines set by individual local authorities, such as testing for pH, metals, anions and organics. We can also look at the particle size of the suspended solid to determine the correct size of filter needed to remove it from the water.

LEGIONELLA – MANAGING THE RISK

LEGIONELLA – MANAGING THE RISK

As an employer, or person in control of premises, you must appoint someone competent to help you meet your health and safety duties and to take responsibility for controlling any identified risk from exposure to legionella bacteria. A competent person, often known as the responsible person, is someone with sufficient authority, competence, necessary skills, knowledge of the system, and experience. The appointed responsible person could be one, or a combination of:

·         yourself

·         one or more workers

·         someone from outside your business

If there are several people responsible for managing risks, e.g. because of shift-work patterns, you must make sure that everyone knows what they are responsible for and how they fit into the overall risk management of the system.

If you decide to employ contractors to carry out water treatment or other work, it is still the responsibility of the competent person to ensure that the treatment is carried out to the required standards. Remember, before you employ a contractor, you should be satisfied that they can do the work you want to the standard that you require. There are a number of external schemes to help you with this, for example, A Code of Conduct for service providers  . The British Standards Institute have published a standard for legionella risk assessment  .

Based on OHSAS 18001 and BS 8800 which are the recognised UK models for Health & Safety Management Systems, Envirochem is able to provide Health & Safety Assessment Services as part of a range of occupational health and safety support services to cover all health and Safety issues.

Face fit testing

Here at Envirochem we offer Face Fit Testing, available on-site or at our laboratory for full-face, half-face, ori-nasal and P3 disposable masks.

An inadequate fit will significantly reduce the protection provided by the RPE and may lead to serious immediate and long-term health problems.

The performance of all RPE face pieces, whether operating by negative pressure, power assistance or compressed air, relies heavily on the quality of fit of the face piece to the wearer’s face.

Fit Testing is available on-site or at our laboratory for full-face, half-face, ori-nasal and P3 disposable masks. Additionally we offer training in the correct use of respiratory protective equipment (RPE).
