Marine Industry Testing

With the Marine Industry opening up again as restrictions are lifting, Envirochem can offer a range of analytical testing/sampling and consultancy services.

If you work in the Marine Industry, chemicals, legionella and asbestos are common hazards for you and your staff. Make sure you minimise the health and safety risks in your work place.

Our Services – Open for Business As Usual.

Envirochem is continuing to provide “business as usual” services for clients from its laboratories in Fareham and Bristol.

The labs will continue to analyse samples on behalf of clients and new customers during the current Covid-19 pandemic. The company will be adapting to any changes as and when the government requires it.

What Services do our laboratories and staff provide;

  • Asbestos
  • Chemicals
  • COSHH – including dust, noise, exhaust gases and dispersed oil
  • Environmental monitoring – including noise and vibration, air quality and emissions testing.
  • Water and legionella microbiological testing.

Water Effluent Suite

The most commonly requested suite of water analysis is our effluent water suite. This includes suspended solids, ammonia and biological oxygen demand (BOD) and is often carried out on the inlet and outlet sections of water treatment systems to check the efficiency of the process.

In addition to tests required to satisfy Environment Agency (EA) guidelines, we can also accommodate testing requests to meet extra guidelines set by individual local authorities, such as testing for pH, metals, anions and organics. We can also look at the particle size of the suspended solid to determine the correct size of filter needed to remove it from the water.

Envirochem offers a large range of colourimetric testing

Envirochem offers a large range of colourimetric testing including ammonia, COD (chemical oxygen demand), cyanide, free and total chlorine, and more.

Ammonia is tested for largely because the amount of ammonia in waste water must fall under a certain limit for it to be disposed of safely into the environment. Most of our samples for Ammonia come from water treatment plants, companies testing their water discharge and from care homes that have their own water treatment facilities.

Cruise ship advanced wastewater Purification testing

With the summer season in full swing, We have had regular cruise ship visits at the Southampton Port to test their Advanced Wastewater Purification. On board we liaise with the Environment Officer and Engineers to take the samples, and measure pH and chlorine directly after the samples are taken. We then return the samples to the lab for chemical and biological testing. The analysis is then sent out to  our Canadian client who looks after the assessment of many of the fleet that dock in Southampton.

Colourimetric tests

Alkalinity, also known as acid capacity, is one of many colourimetric tests that Envirochem offers. This measures how much acid the solution can absorb before its pH is changed. This test is used in concrete water and waste water. Biological organisms required for wastewater treatment are most effective at a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (7-8). In order to maintain this pH the wastewater needs sufficient alkalinity to neutralise acids produced by the biological organisms.

Envirochem tests for a number of anions, including fluoride.

Envirochem tests for a number of anions, including fluoride. Fluoride is naturally present in a large range of plant material and water and needs to be below a certain level to conform to the waste acceptance criteria. It needs to be less than 1.5 mg/l in potable water, less than 5 in effluent water and less than 10mg/kg in soil leachate. We also test for Chloride, Nitrite, Nitrate, Bromide, Phosphate and Sulphate.

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)

Envirochem offers a large range of colourmetric testing. Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is a good initial indicator of how hazardous a liquid sample is.  COD is the total measurement of all chemicals in the water that can be oxidised. It is similar to Biological Oxygen demand because it provides an index to assess the effect of discharged waste water on the environment. It is sometimes used instead of BOD because of its shorter test time.

Waste Water and Effluent Water Analysis

Envirochem offers waste water and effluent water analysis for many common pollutants, such as metals, anions, hydrocarbons, suspended solids, pH, ammonia, phenols and BOD (biological oxygen demand). We can also analyse water from other sources.
