World War 2 Gas Masks

We recently helped a client who had purchased a World War 2 gas mask, who was concerned that it may contain asbestos.

Warnings by the HSE have been issued in the past warning schools and the public that gas masks and helmets and the related equipment should not be handled or worn, as they may contain harmful asbestos and other harmful toxins. Over time the masks condition deteriorates allowing the fibres to become loose and free.

Advice from The Health and Safety Executive to schools and public is to destroy or make safe (by a licensed contractor) the artefacts following tests to look for asbestos fibres.

For more information please visit the HSE website or contact ourselves if you have any concerns.

Checking gas levels with our Portable Dreager gas detector

A local client in Southampton has recently installed a new oven for a more efficient drying process with their manufacturer.

Since the installation their air compressor does not draw in enough cold air to circulate within air fed masks used by the colleagues, and thought the installation could be the cause. We were asked to check the gas levels within the air being produced from the compressor to make sure the levels were adequate. Carbon dioxide and Oxygen levels were measured using our portable Dreager gas detector to measure and record the levels across a work week period.

Using our Dreager we can test for sulphur dioxide, methane as well.

Asbestos on Antiques Roadshow

Popular BBC program Antiques Roadshow has come under criticism after showcasing a World War Two gas mask without issuing an asbestos warning. These masks were made with asbestos in the filters and are hazardous to the wearer. The concerns are that people, including children, are now going to try on these old gas masks and be exposed to asbestos.

BBC have since issued an apology and a warning about the masks.
