Dr Alexander Bianchi (PhD, DipOH., CFFOH, FRSPH., CChem, MRSC)

Senior Scientific Advisor - OH Sciences

Dr Alexander Bianchi brings over 35 years’ experience as both a health and environmental scientist and occupational hygienist.  With a background spanning research, operations and management, his career extended across a broad arc of interrelated disciplines.  Having qualified with the BEBOH CertOH in Occupational Hygiene in 1991 and as a Licentiate of the IOH (organisations forming the heritage BOHS) he went on to develop early OH programmes across a range of operations. He gained his DipOH in 1995.  Alex is a Chartered Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene (CFFOH) and served as BOHS President (2011-2012).  In addition, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH), and holds Chartered Chemist and Membership status of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)

Alex started as an organic chemist within the petrochemical industry in the 1970s.  This led to involvement in environmental sciences, health risk assessment and the emerging disciplines of worker risk management.  In 1987 he was transferred to a new Occupational Health & Hygiene function within Esso UK.  By 1995 he was involved in development and national OH programme management, adding environmental and workplace radiation to his portfolio after RPS training at the heritage NRPB Harwell.

Invited to research and lecture widely for the health-related risk sciences, he published a series of research papers in peer reviewed scientific journals.  Besides serving as a professional science and policy reviewer for leading scientific bodies, he was then co-opted into numerous EU Specialist Committees in Brussels  i.e. CEFIC, CONCAWE, HSPA, OSPA, as well as reviewing the science behind EU OELs.

In October 2003 he was appointed as Occupational Health Centre of Excellence IH Manager (Europe, Africa & Middle East) for ExxonMobil, fulfilling this international role until September 2016.  In this capacity, he ran the EAME IH CoE function managing OH programmes on a cross-global basis, with oversight responsibilities in the EAME sector including West Africa and the Middle East.

Within the field of training and academe, Alex has written and lectured extensively within Environmental, Community Health,  Occupational Health & Occupational Hygiene sciences.  He has lectured at numerous UK universities (e.g. Portsmouth, Surrey (Robens Institute), UEA, and served as an Honorary Lecturer in Occupational Hygiene at the University of Manchester.

From circa 1995 he served with key HSE and BSI Standards Committees (e.g. the WASP Workplace Analysis for Proficiency, HSE Committee for Analytical Requirements, BSI Air Quality) as well as various CIA (Chemical Industries Association) health committees. He was part of the CIA Responsible Care movement of the time supporting community outreach and emergency response specialist activities.

Alex has served the BOHS in many different capacities over the years besides BOHS President, contributing to various committees and specialist work groups (i.e. Environment Community Health Group 1990s, BOHS Higher Education Review Team 2018-2019, Covid Response Expert Working Group 2020).  He was presented with the BOHS “Trevor Ogden Award 2020”.

Alex joined Envirochem Ltd in 2022 in a special advisory and training role and is involved in many aspects of personnel development and education.
