Air Quality is a serious Issue in the UK and across the world.

Air quality is a serious issue in the UK and across the world. Recently a cricket match between India and Sri Lanka was halted due to poor air quality that was recorded at 15 times that of the World Health Organisation toxicity maximum. Players where leaving the field vomiting and had to wear masks to reduce the impact on their health.

More needs to be done about air quality across the world, including the UK.  With potential sources from vehicles, manufacturing and construction everybody needs to do their bit in limiting harmful emissions. One of the first steps to combat these issues is to monitor different air pollutants and protect those most likely to be harmed.

Envirochem can carry out a variety of air quality monitoring and surveys, for more information on this and all our services please call on 01329 287 777 or fill out the form below;

WAC TESTING

WAC TESTING

Envirochem undertakes Landfill Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) testing:

WAC testing is used to determine how a waste will behave once buried in a landfill. This is carried out through analysis of leachate derived from the waste during laboratory analysis. Following testing, a certificate of analysis will be issued.

WAC testing can be carried out on:

– Contaminated soil

– Spent grit

– Industrial waste and other waste streams

 We also offer:

– Total metals by acid digest analysis

– Sample tubs free of charge

– Pick up service and site sampling available

Electrical Conductivity

Electrical conductivity is the measurement of how well the water can pass an electrical current. Conductivity can be affected by the presence of inorganic dissolved solids; organic compounds do not conduct electricity very well so they have a minimal affect on conductivity. Conductivity is dependent on the temperature of the water, the warmer the water the higher the conductivity.

We can test for Electrical conductivity in our chemical laboratory in Fareham, for more information on this and all our services please fill our the form below or call us on 01329 287 777.

Lead in paint

Lead in paint can be found in a variety of buildings, especially if built before 1978. However this period is only guidance as left over paints were often used after this date.

We have conducted surveys in buildings that are be renovated and before demolition and provide our customers with the best course of action to take following the results. If the option of removing the paint is taken we can carry out lead in dust monitoring to ensure works are being carried out appropriately following HSE guidelines.

Bromine

Bromine is a brown/red liquid at room temperature. It is very volatile so it doesn’t occur as a liquid naturally; it is rarely found in a salt form, it is most commonly found as bromide in the ocean because of the high solubility of the bromide anion.

Envirochem offers testing for both Bromine using colourmetrics and bromide using an IC.

Turbidity

Turbidity is the cloudiness or the haziness of liquids caused by individual particles that are generally invisible to the naked eye. The measurement of turbidity is a key test of water quality. High turbidity in rivers and lakes can reduce the light that plants at the bottom receive, this in turn reduces the amount of organisms like fish and shellfish.

We can test for Turbidity using our Colourimeter, for more information please call us on 01328 287 777 or fill out the form below;

3 day rapid Landfill Waste acceptance test (WAC test)

We have seen an increase in clients requesting our 3 day rapid Landfill Waste acceptance test (WAC test). This leachate test is based upon BS EN 12457.

Construction sites often need to muck away and remove building or demolition waste from site in a timely manner. We can provide a quick turnaround either on received samples or pick up samples from site.

Envirochem can also offer a 3 day rapid turnaround on associated tests such as the total metals by acid digest test sometimes called the solids test.

There has also been a noted increase in clients requiring additional tests such as total and speciated polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to EPA 16 and also speciated hydrocarbons with CWG banding and aromatic/aliphatic split to assist in characterising the waste.

Suspended Solids

Suspended Solids is the measure of particles in a water sample trapped by a filter. It tests the quality of waste water after it has been through a waste treatment plant. We do Suspended Solids as part of our effluent water suite; this also includes Ammonia and Biological Oxygen Demand. The limit for effluent water is 500mg/l.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)

The impacts of outdoor air pollution are well documented with less attention paid to the importance of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). IAQ refers to the quality of the air in and around buildings and is impacted by gases such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide as well as VOCs, particulates and microbial contaminants.

We can be exposed to these contaminants at both work and home with the main impacts to health to the heart and lungs. The overall impact is reliant on the concentrations and exposure to these contaminants.

We have the ability to monitor the levels of these contaminants through both passive and active systems to identify whether levels are within specified standards.

Vehicle exhaust fumes

This article highlights concerns over workers being exposed to high levels of vehicle exhaust fumes and the damaging effects this can cause. There is growing awareness of the impact over the exposure of diesel exhaust fumes in particular with a special focus on particulate matter (PM) and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx).

Recently we carried out monitoring within a port terminal gate to determine whether workers were being exposed to levels of PM1, PM2.5, PM10 and Total PM (Mcerts accredited), NOx, SO2 and NO2 (UKAS accredited) that were above the ambient workplace limits.
